Sóller occupies a broad valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs along Mallorca’s northwest coast and carries UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural landscape. The town has a distinct character shaped by its relative isolation: until the road tunnel opened in 1997, the only practical land route was a mountain pass. That history produced an unusually coherent architectural fabric, with a Belle Époque railway station, a Modernista church facade, and stone townhouses that reflect the prosperity brought by the citrus trade with mainland France.

The Plaça de Constitució at the town centre holds the weekly market and a concentration of cafés and restaurants, including Ca’n Pintxo and the long-established Bens d’Avall on the coastal road. Port de Sóller, the harbour district roughly two kilometres from the town square, is reached by historic tram and offers a sheltered bay with restaurants along the waterfront.

The vintage wooden tram connects Sóller town to Port de Sóller in around fifteen minutes. The narrow-gauge Ferrocarril de Sóller railway links the town to Palma in approximately one hour, departing from a terminus near the main square. By road, Palma is around 30 kilometres via the tunnel, taking roughly 30 minutes. Palma de Mallorca Airport handles direct flights to most major European cities, with journey time from Sóller of approximately 40 minutes by car.
