Plaça Major is the central square of Santanyí, a well-preserved market town in the southeast of Mallorca. The square is framed by the imposing sandstone bulk of the Church of Sant Andreu and the distinctive Sa Porta, a 16th-century fortified gate that remains one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Migjorn region. The streets radiating from the square are lined with honey-coloured stone buildings housing galleries, independent boutiques, and cafés, giving the town a coherent architectural character that strict local planning controls have helped maintain.
The weekly Wednesday and Saturday markets on Plaça Major draw both residents and visitors from across the southeast. Café Sa Plaça and Es Cau are established local fixtures for daily coffee and meals. The beaches of Cala Santanyí and Cala Llombards are within a ten-minute drive, and the larger resort of Cala d’Or is approximately fifteen minutes by car.
Santanyí sits roughly 60 kilometres from Palma de Mallorca, a journey of approximately 50 to 55 minutes by car via the Ma-19. Palma Airport, the main international gateway for the Balearic Islands, handles direct routes to most major European cities and is reached in under an hour. There is a regional bus connection to Palma, though private transport is the practical choice for daily use in this part of the island.
