This historic fortified structure in need of renovation, a listed defensive building along with its associated pavilion and archway, was first mentioned in history books in 1202 and boasts a fascinating existence due to its considerable age.

Old trees at the entrance reflect the intact nature of Sankt Lorenzen im Mürztal and welcome visitors to a total of 8,300m² of open land, which still shows the remains of a moat from the former water castle and encloses the existing buildings well. Even here, the history of long-term family ownership can be sensed.

The usable area in the historic castle is divided into:

• 590m² on the ground floor/cellar including heating room and entrance area without courtyard,


• 460m² on the 1st floor,


• 550m² on the 2nd floor,


• unfinished attic.

The adjacent residential house with two separate living units offers an additional total area of approximately 260m² spread over the ground floor, 1st floor, and attic.

Garages for three cars and old storage sheds are also available.

The approximately 120m² large courtyard of the castle can serve as a charming and special setting for many occasions: whether for tourism or business use, as a museum or gallery, event spaces for weddings or concerts, seminar rooms, markets, etc. The possibilities here are almost limitless.

At the beginning of the 20th century, structural adaptations and modernization measures were carried out inside the castle and the residential house to utilize the vast usable space for up to 24 rental apartments.

These measures included renovations of roof trusses and coverings, partial window replacement, connection to municipal supply and disposal lines, installation of a central gas heating system, drying work on affected exterior walls, construction of a new access road, and parking areas.

Until recently, several families lived in the continuously maintained apartments in the castle and residential house.

To determine the actual age and condition of the historic walls, recent architectural-historical investigations were commissioned.

The origin of the original masonry dating back to the 12th to 13th century was clearly confirmed, and a request for the castle’s restoration was submitted to the responsible authorities.

The building application along with approved renovation plans is available for review, and construction work has already begun on the north wing.
