Saint-Raphaël occupies a privileged position on the Var coast, where the Massif de l’Estérel meets the Mediterranean. The city carries a distinct Belle Époque identity, shaped by the late nineteenth-century arrival of the railway and the Parisian bourgeoisie who built grand villas along its shores. Today it balances the character of a working port town with the infrastructure of a serious Côte d’Azur address, sitting between Fréjus to the west and the more internationally prominent Saint-Tropez peninsula to the south.
The port of Santa Lucia, the old town market on Place Victor Hugo, and the seafront promenade along the Plage du Veillat define daily life here. Restaurants including La Voile and Le Sirocco serve the port area directly. The weekly market and the Casino Barrière are both within the central core.
Saint-Raphaël has its own TGV-connected mainline station, with direct services to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately three hours and to Marseille in under ninety minutes. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately sixty kilometres east, reachable in around fifty minutes by car via the A8 autoroute. Cannes is thirty kilometres to the east, and Toulon approximately seventy kilometres to the west.
