Matisse considered the motif as a fully-fledged architectural element, just like a wall or a window. This house demonstrates this: graphics, foliage, bold blacks, set on a white base that keeps everything in balance. The result is never verbose; it is inhabited. Here, it responds to the architecture: dark windows, glass floor upstairs, double-height living room, patios that rhythm the house, flat roofs and spacious spirits for a perfectly organized nonchalance… The design embraces what it is, without overload.
