THE AREA: Mostacciano is a district of Rome, located within the territory of Municipio Roma XII. Also called EUR Mostacciano, the area is mainly characterized by residential housing. Mostacciano is divided into three zones, which originally reflected different building densities: Mostacciano A, bounded by Viale Pechino, Via Padre Giovanni Antonio Filippini, Viale Don Pasquino Borghi, Via Domenico Jachino, Via Cristoforo Colombo, and the Grande Raccordo Anulare; Mostacciano B, bounded by Via Cristoforo Colombo, the Grande Raccordo Anulare, Via Pontina, and Via Carmelo Maestrini; Mostacciano C, bounded by Via Cristoforo Colombo, Via di Decima, Via Pontina, and the Grande Raccordo Anulare. Mostacciano was not originally the name of a estate, but rather the term used as early as the late 12th century to refer to a locality between the estates of Acqua Acetosa to the east, Casal Brunori to the south, Spinaceto, and Torrino to the west. The name refers to the must that could be obtained from its vineyards. On one of the small hills stood a watchtower that monitored the entire territory enclosed by the ancient Ostiense and Laurentina roads and the ditches of Spinaceto and Vallerano. The name derives from the Latin ”mustacanus,” meaning must, produced on the Pallavicini estate, and thanks to the intervention of Princess Elvina Pallavicini, the district of Mostacciano was born on the former family farm.
Mostacciano Estate: The remains of a tower, dating back to the 13th century AD, are underground on a small hill about 300 meters northwest of the modern Mostacciano farmhouse, near the intersection of Via Cristoforo Colombo and the Grande Raccordo Anulare. The remains of an ancient road, roughly following the current Via di Decima, have been identified in several sections along the northeastern border of the Mostacciano area. Less than a kilometer south of this area, at the intersection of Via Pontina and Via di Valleranello, a road branch and the remains of a necropolis dating to the early imperial age have been uncovered, with pit tombs covered with capuchin tiles; this route, heading northeast, likely led towards the hills of Casal dell’Ara, in the Acqua Acetosa estate. Within the Mostacciano area, along Via Domenico Jachino, the section of masonry in tuff reticulated work of a cistern belonging to a nearby rustic villa, dating to the late Republican period (end 2nd-1st century BC), is visible; nearby, within a condominium garden, are the remains of a paved road. Other structures, currently no longer visible, located in Contrada Monti della Creta, probably refer to a rural settlement from the Roman era.
