Some mountain retreats put adventure within easy reach. Others bring the mountains to your doorstep. Langetjønnvegen 73 belongs to the latter. Set in an elevated position in a peaceful, established cabin community at Gausta, this property enjoys plenty of sunshine, a secluded outdoor living area and magnificent views of Gaustatoppen and the surrounding mountains. Here, the warmth and authentic character of a Norwegian mountain cabin come together with easy access to some of the area’s most popular activities.
The view is an experience in itself. Gaustatoppen accompanies you throughout the day, providing a spectacular backdrop from the living room, outdoor spaces and guest cabin. The mountain changes character with the weather, light and seasons, from snow-covered peaks and crisp winter mornings to the warm colours of late summer and autumn’s first snowfall. This is a view that photographs can only begin to capture and that truly deserves to be experienced in person.
In winter, the location is hard to beat. Nordic ski trails run right outside the door, allowing you to set off without driving, loading the car or searching for parking. Gausta offers an extensive trail network covering approximately 85 kilometres, with routes through woodland and across open mountain terrain. There are options for everything from short family outings and leisurely Sunday excursions to longer, more demanding adventures with sweeping mountain views.
For those who prefer downhill skiing, the property offers ski in/ski out access, with a connecting lift approximately three minutes away on skis. Gausta Ski Resort has 44 slopes, catering to young children, beginners and experienced skiers alike. Younger family members can practise in accessible areas, while more confident skiers explore steeper slopes and pick up the pace. The short distance between the cabin, Nordic trails and ski resort also makes it easy to enjoy different activities during the day before gathering again for lunch or dinner.
Despite its peaceful and secluded setting, the property is close to Gausta’s social scene. Gaustablikk Fjellresort, the ski resort and Den Lykkelige Sportsmann are approximately three minutes away by car or around a 20-minute walk from the cabin. Restaurants, bars, après-ski and seasonal events are all within easy reach. Gaustablikk Fjellresort also offers a wellness area with a swimming pool and floating saunas. You can easily combine the privacy of your own mountain retreat with a restaurant meal, a relaxing sauna session or an evening out.
Gausta is much more than a winter destination. As the snow melts, the landscape opens up to a wide choice of hiking trails, cycling routes and outdoor experiences. Nearby walks lead towards peaks such as Ørnenipa and Toreskyrkja, while gentler routes explore the landscape around Lake Kvitåvatn. Autumn brings opportunities to pick wild blueberries, lingonberries and cloudberries, with clear days inviting you to explore a mountain landscape rich in colour and expansive views.
Lake Kvitåvatn is a natural gathering place on warm summer days. Swim, paddle a canoe or stand-up paddleboard, take out a rowing boat or simply relax by the water. The combination of lake, mountains and a wide range of activities makes the area particularly appealing to families with children. Tinn also has numerous fishing lakes, home to species including trout and Arctic char, giving you every reason to keep a fishing rod among your outdoor essentials.
Rising to 1,883 metres above sea level, Gaustatoppen is the area’s unmistakable landmark and a natural destination for a mountain excursion. On clear days, the summit is renowned for views extending across large parts of southern Norway. The hike to the top is a classic, while Gaustabanen makes the mountain accessible to many more visitors. This remarkable railway travels inside the mountain, carrying passengers up in approximately 15 minutes. Children, grandparents and anyone wishing to avoid the long hike can experience the views and atmosphere high on the mountain.
Rjukan is approximately 20 minutes away by car, offering grocery shops, everyday services, places to eat and a fascinating range of cultural attractions and activities. The town’s industrial history forms part of the Rjukan–Notodden Industrial Heritage Site, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Norwegian Industrial Workers Museum at Vemork tells the story of hydroelectric development, the industrial community and the wartime heavy water sabotage operations. The area is also home to the historic Saboteurs’ Trail, combining an outdoor adventure with one of Norway’s best-known wartime stories.
Getting around Gausta is straightforward. Shuttle and mountain bus services connect different parts of the destination and provide onward access to Rjukan. The property has road access all the way to the cabin, snow clearing to the door, parking for six to seven cars and an electric vehicle charger. Arriving and departing is easy, even when several families or groups of friends gather. There is no need to carry luggage and groceries over long distances, leaving more time to enjoy your stay in the mountains.
A perfect day here might begin with a leisurely breakfast as the morning sun lights up Gaustatoppen. Afterwards, everyone can choose between Nordic skiing, downhill skiing, a summit hike, cycling or a quiet day by Lake Kvitåvatn. Perhaps lunch at the hotel, a visit to the wellness facilities or an excursion to Rjukan will follow before you return to the cabin. End the evening by the fireplace with board games and good conversation, or relax in the hot tub beneath its shelter as darkness settles over the mountains.
It is this combination that makes the location so appealing: privacy and closeness to nature, together with convenient access to activities, restaurants and everyday comforts. Fill your days with experiences from morning to evening, or simply stay at the cabin and let the views, silence and mountain tranquillity set the pace. Langetjønnvegen 73 is a place for active holidays, leisurely meals and cherished traditions throughout all four seasons.
