This distinguished property is a rare opportunity for those seeking more than just a seaside retreat – here you acquire a piece of Southern Norway’s history, with soul, character, and an unrivalled location.

A short history of “Mindalen”:
The main house was originally built in 1817 by priest Jens Schancke as a widow’s seat for his wife Thomine “Mina” Schlytter – hence the name “Mindalen.” Later, Captain Jørgen J. Nistevåg acquired the property, and his son eventually sold it to Ragnvald Blakstad in 1918. Blakstad’s son carried out a major renovation and expansion of the old house, which at the time also contained an artist’s studio. From the 1930s, Risør Women’s Health Association operated an orphanage here, before Risør Pulp Mill took over the estate and, in the 1950s, converted the main house into four apartments for its workers. “Mindalen” was later sold to Risør Municipality, which eventually separated the building mass and sold it to private owners in 1978.

The property is located on Barmen, just outside Risør town center, with close proximity to and views over the Sørfjord.

Risør is about a 2.5-hour drive from Oslo and is the first true Southern Norway town you reach after passing through the “Sørlandsporten.”
Risør is a picturesque and sunny coastal gem, known for its characteristic white-painted wooden houses. It is no coincidence that Risør is called “the white town by the Skagerrak.”

Risør is renowned for its vibrant art and cultural scene, as well as its bustling harbor area, which hosts the famous Wooden Boat Festival each year. The town is also well known for its galleries and skilled artisans.

Since the removal of the residency obligation in 2023, Risør has seen the establishment of several high-quality restaurants, and especially in summer the waterfront comes alive with a vibrant atmosphere.

The town center offers charming local restaurants and shops, a wine monopoly (Vinmonopolet), accommodation options, and a wide range of activities – all within short distance from the property.
