HISTORY OF TIRRENIA:

Tirrenia is a coastal fraction of the municipality of Pisa, takes its name from the Tyrrhenian Sea (although it overlooks the Ligurian Sea, according to the conventions of the Hydrographic Institute of the Navy) and is populated by about 3,000 inhabitants.

It is located southwest of the municipal capital, between the coast and the Migliarino San Rossore Massaciuccoli Natural Park: practically in the center of the Tuscan coast, immediately south of Versilia and more precisely between Marina di Pisa to the north and Calambrone to the south.

The fraction was also launched as a city of cinema and the first large-scale film studios in Italy were built within it, at the same time as the foundation of the production house Tirrenia and its Film Studios inaugurated in 1933. A cinematic dream that lasted very little , if we consider that already in 1937 the first studios of the future Cinecittà were born in Rome. Tirrenia’s studios were requisitioned by the Germans during the Second World War and used as deposits of strategic material.

Today the economy of Tirrenia no longer owes anything to the cinema and is based almost entirely on tourism, both national and foreign, above all thanks to the presence of various seaside resorts. Having said that, the fraction produces income also thanks to fishing (practiced mainly by the locals), thanks to the presence of several agricultural research fields of the nearby University of Pisa and thanks to the induced generated by the American base of Camp Darby, located in part of the its territory.
