Palma de Mallorca carries a weight that few Mediterranean cities can match. The capital of the Balearic Islands combines a genuinely historic urban core, anchored by the Gothic cathedral La Seu rising above the bay, with a cosmopolitan waterfront that draws an international community of residents year-round. The Paseo Maritimo, the city’s defining seafront promenade, runs along a working harbour where superyachts moor alongside traditional fishing vessels, giving the city an energy that is both sophisticated and authentically rooted.
Daily life in Palma centres on the Old Town, the Paseo Maritimo, and the Santa Catalina market district. Restaurants along the waterfront include C’an Eduardo, known for paella and fideuà with cathedral views, and Sa Cranca for fresh seafood. The Es Baluard Museum of Contemporary Art sits directly on the promenade. The annual Palma Superyacht Show brings the international yachting world to the port each spring.
Palma Airport, Son Sant Joan, is approximately 11 kilometres east of the city centre, reachable in around 15 to 20 minutes by car. It is one of Spain’s busiest airports, with direct year-round and seasonal routes to most major European cities including London, Paris, Frankfurt, and Zurich, as well as connections to Madrid and Barcelona. Ferry services from the port connect Palma to Barcelona, Valencia, and Ibiza, with crossings ranging from roughly four to eight hours depending on the route and vessel.
