Palma is the capital of the Balearic Islands and one of the most architecturally significant cities in the western Mediterranean. The old town, known as Casco Antiguo, is defined by its Gothic cathedral, La Seu, its Arab Baths, and a dense fabric of Renaissance palaces and medieval lanes. This is a city that functions year-round as a genuine European capital, with a resident population of over 400,000 and a cultural life that extends well beyond its summer profile.

Daily life in Palma centres on the Mercat de l’Olivar for fresh produce, and the restaurants along Carrer de la Mar and Passeig del Born for dining. The Museu Es Baluard and the Fundació Miró Mallorca anchor the cultural calendar. The Seaside Promenade, Passeig Marítim, is minutes from the old town on foot.

Palma Airport, Son Sant Joan, is approximately 11 kilometres from the city centre, around 20 minutes by car or taxi, and handles direct flights to most major European cities year-round, with significantly expanded routes from April through October. The city has no high-speed rail connection to the Spanish mainland, but regular ferry services from the port connect to Barcelona and Valencia, with crossings of approximately seven to eight hours overnight.
