La Tonnara DI Sferracavallo: Villa Arezzo DI Trifiletti

Near Mondello, Palermo’s most famous fishing village, there is another with a very interesting history. Sferracavallo (Sferracavaddu) boasts an enviable location, nestled between the Capo Gallo promontory on one side and Monte Billiemi on the other. Much of this area is part of the Capo Gallo nature reserve, and the stretch of sea that borders it falls within the ”Capo Gallo” Marine Protected Area.

Originally, it was a fishing village featuring two watchtowers, one from the 1400s and another from the 1500s. In the 1600s, the Morello family acquired, along with some enclosed lands in Sferracavallo, the buildings of an old tuna fishery (the so-called ”tonnarazza”), including a courtyard and warehouses.

At the beginning of the 1900s, the tuna fishery buildings were expanded (as evidenced by some ground-floor rooms with 17th-century barrel vaults) to take on their current appearance: on the sea-facing side, the building retains a rustic character, with ground-floor windows featuring full-arched openings and rectangular windows on the first floor; the upper facade is bordered by swallowtail battlements.
