The Pisa Hills.
They are a historic and geographical region consisting of the hilly areas of the province of Pisa, south of Pisa and Pontedera, east of Livorno, and north of Volterra. Currently, they are also divided into Valdera and Lari Hills.
For Valdera, geographically, it refers to that part of the Province of Pisa. As of December 31, 2015, the Valdera area has 57,189 inhabitants spread over a total area of 624.17 square kilometers, with a density of 187 inhabitants per km².
Including the neighboring municipalities of the Lower Valdarno, the total population is 126,224 inhabitants over a total area of 1,184.36 km², with a density of 106 inhabitants per km².
The idea and concept of ”Valdera” became established in the 20th century following the growing economic and administrative importance of Pontedera, a city that provides administrative, educational, healthcare, and industrial services to the other municipalities of Valdera. Over time, ”Valdera” has come to replace older geographical entities. Some historical correspondence with the medieval period has been found, when the Cadolingi confederation controlled various localities between Bientina and the Lari Hills (not exactly aligned along the Era River), forming what could be called ”Cadolingia.”
