Villa Bergfried – A House That Tells History

When Dr. Edmund von Zallinger (1843–1914) purchased a plot of land from the Oberbozen Waterworks Company on 30 November 1895, he created more than just a building site. At that time, Oberbozen was undergoing a remarkable transformation, evolving from a traditional mountain village into an exclusive summer retreat for Bolzano’s affluent middle and upper classes.

To design his summer residence, Zallinger commissioned the renowned Bolzano architect and city master builder Johann Bittner (1852–1905). Bittner was among South Tyrol’s most influential architects around the turn of the twentieth century. Through his villas and public buildings, he combined distinguished architecture with the unique character of the Alpine landscape, creating structures that continue to shape the region’s architectural heritage to this day.

The history of the villa can be traced with exceptional accuracy. Following the death of Dr. Edmund von Zallinger, ownership passed to his son, Dr. Hubert von Zallinger, in 1918. Just one year later, in 1919, the property was sold to Baron Franz Moll. After his death, the villa was inherited in 1932 by his wife, Baroness Moll, née Countess Marzani, before becoming the property of the Endrizzi family in 1949.

To this day, Villa Bergfried stands as a testament to the era in which Oberbozen became one of Tyrol’s most distinguished summer resorts. It brings together the legacy of a respected Bolzano family and the work of one of the region’s most significant architects. Together, patron Dr. Edmund von Zallinger and architect Johann Bittner created a residence that has formed part of the cultural and architectural heritage of the Renon plateau for more than 125 years.
