The Cinque Terre “Five Lands” is one of most beautiful Mediterranean areas within Liguria.
Monterosso, the first and largest of the Cinque Terre was born, together with Vernazza, and then the others followed: Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore. The five villages, developed along a coastal stretch of 10 km, are characterized by typical Ligurian streets called “caruggi”, brightly colored houses and historical monuments. The landscape that characterizes the area is made up of dry stone walls on which there are paths, gardens and vineyards which are possible thanks to the excellent exposure of the sunny promontory and shelter from the north winds. Being a particularly steep and rocky coast full of bays and inlets, the beaches are not very numerous though all of exceptional charm, each different from the other. The largest of these is that of Monterosso.
The Cinque Terre have been included within the National Natural Park since 1999 as well as being designated as a protected natural marine area.
