Step through the doors of Palazzo Rossi Barattini and you step into two Modenas at once: the city of dukes, decorators, and dynastic alliances that built this palazzo in 1780, and the modern capital of Italian excellence that has since grown up around it — a city where Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini were born, and where chef Massimo Bottura’s Osteria Francescana has redefined what Italian cuisine can be. Few addresses in Italy offer this particular alchemy: centuries of aristocratic history, footsteps from the engineering and gastronomic capital of the world.
Facing onto Via Emilia, directly opposite the historic portico of the Collegio, the palazzo was completed in 1780 by Count Giuseppe Filippo Marchisio, who united several older houses into one grand noble residence — finished and decorated within a single remarkable year. Passed to the Olivari family in 1803 and later home to the patriarchal Aggazzotti family, the building remains today in the hands of the heirs of the Rossi Barattini family, custodians of its story for generations.
The entrance hall sets the tone with two seventeenth-century benches of family provenance and nineteenth-century decoration by Becchi, carefully restored. A noce-wood spiral staircase, commissioned in the late 1800s to a Milanese engineer’s design and cast in iron and ghisa imported from Belgium, rises toward the noble floors above.
The Unique Apartment on the Piano Nobile
On the first floor unfolds the palazzo’s principal apartment: four interconnecting rooms lit by seven windows over Via Emilia, with two French doors opening onto a marble balcony overlooking Corso Canalgrande — Modena’s historic centre laid out below.
At its heart is the Sala di Venere, known within the family as the ”yellow room”: Louis XVI-style stuccoes and gilded mirrors dated 1780 and signed by Modenese decorator Vincenzo Galli, flanked by six original gilt wrought-iron sconces. The white Carrara marble fireplace retains its original cast-iron fireback and vine-motif stucco base, set above a hearth floor of traditional Sassuolo tile. Overhead, a frescoed ceiling by Pietro Minghelli of Vignola and Modenese painter Geminiano Vincenzi centres on an oval medallion of Venus receiving Aeneas’s arms from Vulcan — a scene lifted straight from Book VIII of the Aeneid.
The adjoining dining room, study, and entrance hall reflect late-nineteenth-century renovations under the Aggazzotti family, with the dining room ceiling bearing the heraldic crests of both the Aggazzotti and Barattini lines, and three original 1780 mirrors still in place in the entrance and study. Double-leaf doors, several original to the eighteenth century, carry the shaped Louis XV panelling characteristic of the upper floors.
Modena Today: Where History Lives at Full Speed
Step outside, and the eighteenth century gives way instantly to twenty-first-century Italian craftsmanship at its most thrilling. A short drive places you at the gates of Maranello and the Ferrari factory, or inside the Enzo Ferrari Museum — built around the very house where Ferrari’s founder was born. This is the unmistakable core of Motor Valley, the stretch of Emilia-Romagna that also claims Lamborghini, Maserati, Pagani, and Ducati as native sons, where supercars are still built by hand a few miles from where this palazzo’s stuccoes were carved by hand nearly 250 years ago.
The same precision and pride run through Modena’s food culture. Osteria Francescana, Massimo Bottura’s three-Michelin-starred restaurant, sits minutes away, while the covered markets of the historic centre overflow with aged balsamic vinegar, tortellini, and Parmigiano-Reggiano made the way it has always been made. The Romanesque Duomo and Ghirlandina tower, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, rise a short walk from the palazzo’s front door.
