Lourmarin occupies a singular position in the Luberon, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished villages in Provence. Its medieval castle, the oldest Renaissance château in Provence, anchors a village of ochre stone lanes, weekly markets, and independent bookshops that have drawn writers and artists for generations. Albert Camus spent his final years here and is buried in the village cemetery. The surrounding landscape of the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon frames the village with vineyards, lavender fields, and garrigue.
Daily life in Lourmarin centres on the Friday market and the cafés and restaurants along the main square. Le Moulin de Lourmarin holds a long-standing reputation for serious Provençal cooking. Apt, the main market town of the Luberon, is 20 kilometres to the northeast. Aix-en-Provence, with its full range of cultural institutions, private schools, and international services, is approximately 35 kilometres south.
Aix-en-Provence TGV station is roughly 40 minutes by car and connects to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately three hours. Marseille-Provence Airport is around 50 kilometres from Lourmarin, typically a 45 to 55 minute drive, with direct flights to major European cities and beyond. Avignon TGV station, serving high-speed connections to Paris and Lyon, is approximately one hour north via the A7 motorway.
