Mahón, the capital of Menorca, occupies a commanding position above one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean, a deep-water inlet that shaped the city’s history under British, French, and Spanish rule. The historic centre retains its layered architectural character, with Georgian-influenced facades, sash windows, and stone archways sitting alongside Baroque churches and traditional Menorcan townhouses. The area around Plaça Bastió sits at the edge of the old walled city, where the original gate structure still marks the boundary between the medieval core and the port below.

Daily life in central Mahón centres on the covered market at Claustre del Carme, a short walk from Plaça Bastió, and the restaurant terraces along the port promenade. Café Mirador and the fish restaurants on Moll de Llevant are local staples. The main commercial streets, Ses Moreres and Carrer Hannover, are within a few minutes on foot.

Menorca Airport is approximately 5 kilometres from the city centre, around ten minutes by car, and operates direct flights to major European cities including London, Barcelona, Madrid, and Frankfurt, with frequency increasing significantly from April through October. The Barcelona ferry, operated by Baleària and Trasmediterránea from the port directly below the old town, covers the crossing in roughly eight hours overnight, providing a practical alternative for those relocating with vehicles or larger shipments.
