The volume of water contained is approximately 37.5 billion m³ with a theoretical turnover time of about 4 years. The watershed area is approximately 6,598 km², of which 3,229 is in Italian territory and 3,369 in Swiss territory (the ratio between the watershed area and the lake area is 31.1). The highest altitude of the watershed is Punta Dufour in the Monte Rosa massif (4,633 m above sea level), while the average altitude is 1,270 m above sea level. The basin is characterized by the existence of about thirty artificial reservoirs with a collection of approximately 600 million m³ of water that, if released simultaneously, would raise the lake level by about 2.5 m.
