Maccagno is a town of 2,041 inhabitants, the historic center of the municipality of Maccagno with Pino and Veddasca in the province of Varese. In Maccagno, in a ”bridge” building overlooking the mouth of the Giona stream, is the Parisi-Valle Museum; designed by Maurizio Sacripanti, it hosts rotating exhibitions of contemporary art. In Maccagno, on the shores of Lake Maggiore, there is a cliff equipped as a rock climbing gym called ”Il Cinzanino.” The cliff is managed by the Luino section of the Italian Alpine Club.
Lake Maggiore is situated at an elevation of about 193 meters above sea level. Its surface area is 212 km², most of which, about 80%, is in Italian territory. It has a perimeter of 170 km and a length of 64.37 km (the longest among Italian lakes); the maximum width is 10 km and the average width is 3.9 km. The volume of water contained is approximately 37.5 billion m³ with a theoretical turnover time of about 4 years. The watershed area is approximately 6,598 km², of which 3,229 is in Italian territory and 3,369 in Swiss territory (the ratio between the watershed area and the lake area is 31.1). The highest altitude of the watershed is Punta Dufour in the Monte Rosa massif (4,633 m above sea level), while the average altitude is 1,270 m above sea level. The basin is characterized by the existence of about thirty artificial reservoirs with a collection of approximately 600 million m³ of water that, if released simultaneously, would raise the lake level by about 2.5 m. The maximum depth is about 370 m.
