Luino, formerly known as Luvino until 1889, is an Italian municipality with 14,575 inhabitants in the province of Varese in Lombardy. The town, which overlooks the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore or Verbano, now nicknamed ”Costa Fiorita”, is especially known for hosting the famous International Market every Wednesday, which involves the entire town center and attracts many tourists every week. It is an important center for tourism and the economy of Alto-Varesotto. It borders Switzerland to the east. Lake Maggiore is located at an altitude of about 193 meters above sea level. Its surface area is 212 km², most of which, about 80%, is in Italian territory. It has a perimeter of 170 km and a length of 64.37 km (the longest among Italian lakes); the maximum width is 10 km and the average width is 3.9 km. The volume of water contained is equal to 37.5 billion m³ with a theoretical turnover time of about 4 years. The watershed area is about 6,598 km², of which 3,229 in Italian territory and 3,369 in Swiss territory (the ratio between the surface area of the basin and that of the lake is 31.1). The highest altitude of the watershed is Punta Dufour in the Monte Rosa massif (4,633 m above sea level), while the average is 1,270 m above sea level. The basin is characterized by the existence of about thirty artificial reservoirs with a collection of about 600 million m³ of water which, if released simultaneously, would raise the lake level by about 2.5 m. The maximum depth is about 370 m. Find more information about our beautiful area by clicking here.
