Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is one of the most singular villages in Provence, built at the base of a dramatic limestone cliff from which the Sorgue river emerges as one of the most powerful resurgent springs in the world. The village carries genuine historical weight: the Italian poet Petrarch lived here for sixteen years in the 14th century, and that literary heritage remains woven into the identity of the place. The scale is intimate, the stone architecture largely intact, and the surrounding landscape of cliffs, clear water, and dense vegetation is unlike anywhere else in the Vaucluse.
Daily life centres on the village itself, with its mill-lined riverbanks, the Musée Pétrarque, and the Musée de la Résistance. L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, renowned for its antique dealers and Sunday market, is seven kilometres away. Gordes and the Luberon villages are within a thirty-minute drive.
Avignon, with its TGV station connecting to Paris Gare de Lyon in roughly two hours and forty minutes, is approximately thirty kilometres from Fontaine-de-Vaucluse, a drive of under thirty-five minutes. Avignon Caumont Airport handles regional and charter traffic, while Marseille Provence Airport, the principal international hub for the region, is around eighty kilometres away and reachable in under an hour by car.
