A residence that carries centuries of history
It is hypothesized that an ancient Roman road passed through the area of Brongio Superiore and that the conformation of the place — elevated, protected, strategic — was ideal for hosting a mansio: a stopping station and horse change for travelers and the legions in transit.
Vestiges of what could have been a Roman watchtower may still be incorporated among the houses of the village. And the palace itself, according to some readings, would have been born right on the foundations of those ancient walls.
These are not certainties. But we like to think it is true.
What is documented, however, begins in 1420, when Brongio Superiore was already a fortified medieval village. The residence we propose was the main building of that defensive system — the beating heart of a settlement that relied on its walls.
The tower was originally Casa Nembrini: a defensive tower house. In the last part of the palace was the family’s private chapel, which over time also became the place of worship for the villagers, who came here to attend religious services.
Some visible traces of the original system still remain in the extreme parts of the village: stones that tell, to those who know how to look, of a time when this place was a stronghold.
The Fumagalli: nobles, financiers, protagonists
The palace was for centuries the residence of the Nobili Fumagalli, and their coat of arms is still there, on the fireplace of the main hall — not as an ornament, but as a signature.
A family of ancient Brianzola origins — whose roots, according to the Lombard Historical Society, lie right here in Brongio — the Fumagalli became over the centuries one of the most influential families in Lombardy, with branches spread in Milan, Bergamo, and Como.
The event of 1652 is one of those stories that says a lot about the character of a family. According to the reconstruction of the Municipality, the Fumagalli paid 1,150 lire to redeem Brongio from the dominion of the D’Adda — not to make it their own fief, but to free it from the control of other lords. The inhabitants were to repay the sum with 5% interest. A matter that remained open until at least 1860. Noble gesture or strategic move? Probably both. The Fumagalli were like that.
The tower, the documents, the confirmation
Unlike some generic reconstructions that place the tower in the early twentieth century, its real antiquity is attested by an unequivocal source: the Division Report drawn up by engineers Vertua and Bianchi in the mid-nineteenth century, for the noble succession of the Fumagalli. The document precisely describes the five-level structure and the presence of the upper belvedere — confirming the tower as a central and already consolidated element of the residence, long before anyone could doubt its origin.
The Micanzi family: the restoration, the respect, the future
In 1970, the residence passed into the hands of the Micanzi family, who purchased it and undertook a patient restoration work. They are the last custodians of this place — those who chose to preserve its identity instead of distorting its character.
Ville Aperte: a residence that invites visits
The property has been included multiple times in the Ville Aperte circuit in Brianza as a historic residence, with guided tours under the name of Casa Micanzi in Brongio.
