Leuca is a name derived from the Greek λευκός (leukós), meaning ‘white’, and is common to other place names such as Lèucade, a Greek island. According to Strabo, the promontory was originally called by the Greek name τα Λευκά (ta Leuká, the Whites), probably because of the white rocks perpendicular to the sea. Hence the name of a very rare plant, found only in this area, called Fiordaliso del Capo di Leuca.
