Fontaine-de-Vaucluse is one of the most distinctive villages in the Vaucluse, built around the source of the Sorgue river, one of the most powerful resurgent springs in the world. The village sits at the base of a dramatic limestone cliff, and the river that emerges here feeds the celebrated waterways of L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue five kilometres downstream. Classified among the Plus Beaux Villages de France, it carries genuine historical weight as the retreat of the poet Petrarch, who lived here for much of the fourteenth century.

L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, five minutes by car, offers the region’s best weekly antiques markets, held on Sundays, along with a strong restaurant scene including La Prévôté and Le Vivier.
