Dorio is a picturesque village in the Eastern Alto Lario, whose houses seem to cling to the terraced slopes that descend towards the lake. It is a village that has maintained the appearance of the past, that life suspended between the lake and the mountains, where olive trees, vines and laurel have been cultivated for centuries surrounded by dense and lush nature. Made up of small towns called lööch in the local dialect, the municipality is crossed by six valleys: from north to south there are respectively the Valle degli Asini, the Valle di Dorio, the Valle dei Mulini and then the smaller valleys Torchiedo, Marcello and Maronasso . The history of Dorio has ancient roots; the Ligurians and then the Celts settled on its vast territory, traces of which are in the large rocks with cup marks used for religious rites in the Comballo area and in the Palstaab (tool-axe from the Bronze Age, preserved in the Civic Museums of Como ) found in the Garavina area in the last decade of the nineteenth century. In the Middle Ages the main town stood at a higher altitude than the current centre, in the Mandonico area. Situated in a perched position between the Dorio Valley and that of the Mills, the old nucleus was built to escape invasions and looting. Of notable historical-artistic interest is the ancient parish church of S. Giorgio, built here in the 14th century on a grassy clearing but rebuilt several times over the centuries. Inside there are precious frescoes dated 1492 which depict the deeds of St. George. Starting from the end of the 17th century, when the danger of attacks and troop passages ceased (unfortunately we remember the Landsknechts in 1629, who spread the plague, decimating the population of Doria), the families moved further down, towards the Solmogno area, which then gave rise to the current site of Dorio. The link with Mandonico however remained strong, so much so that the current parish church, built in 1676 in the center of the town and dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, was also dedicated to St. George in 1787, when the old parish of the rural village became unsafe. Another church that shows the faith of the community is S. Rocco, a frescoed oratory located at 484 m where in 1856 the inhabitants made a vow to be saved from the cholera epidemic. However, Dorio is not just history and art; it is a quiet and secluded location ideal for tourists who love relaxation and hiking. The beach, at times wild, extends along one kilometer from the border of Corenno to the Rivetta area towards the north. Accessible on foot for peaceful walks, in some places it is caressed by the ”Breva”, guaranteeing fun for sailing, windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts. Hikers, on the other hand, will be able to try their hand at the paths and ancient mule tracks that connect the different locations or take the Sentiero del Viandante, which in the Doria route proves to be very suggestive. The path, an ancient transit route that led to the mountain hamlets, enters the chestnut woods and offers truly unique views of the landscape.
