Villa Adelaide Corti

Villa Adelaide Corti stands on the hills of Como, on Via Cardano, in a commanding position that offers extraordinary open views over the lake and the surrounding landscape. A place suspended in time, where history, nature, and memory still coexist today in perfect harmony.

The area of Cardano takes its name from the ancient silk carding activity, deeply connected to the history of the territory and of the villa itself. As early as the 18th century, the hillside was dotted with numerous rural farmhouses dedicated to silkworm breeding, an activity that shaped the local economy for centuries. Following the silkworm plague that occurred toward the end of the 18th century, many of these buildings were transformed into elegant countryside residences for Milanese nobility.

The present villa was inaugurated in 1836 as an aristocratic summer residence during the Austro-Hungarian period and was named Villa Adelaide Corti, in honor of Giacomo Corti’s wife. To this day, the property preserves the authentic soul of the historic Lombard farmhouse, enriched by the refined charm of the 19th-century residences of Lake Como.

During the war years, the villa became a summer refuge and gathering place for several aristocratic Milanese families, further strengthening its historical and symbolic significance.

The estate extends across approximately 18,000 square meters of private land immersed in the tranquility of nature. Among ancient pathways, panoramic views, and historic terraces, the property still preserves an old orchard, a vegetable garden, and areas once dedicated to vineyards and agricultural cultivation. The landscape is enhanced by the typical flora of Lake Como, including camellias, hydrangeas, azaleas, and Japanese ornamental trees, all contributing to an elegant and timeless atmosphere.

The surrounding land was also the site of the historic Battle of San Fermo, further testimony to the deep connection between the property and the Como region.

From an architectural perspective, Villa Adelaide Corti retains numerous original period features. Particularly notable is the use of the rare Pietra di Moltrasio, the celebrated black stone sourced from quarries that are now exhausted, still visible in several details throughout the estate. The interiors preserve red and yellow streaked Lombard terracotta floors, original frescoes in the salon and entrance hall, and historic chestnut and walnut furnishings that still tell the story of the villa’s noble and rural past.

The original farmhouse structure was divided into two residential units intended for two families. The rustic ground floor housed the cellars used for storing wine, cheeses, and cured meats, along with the large vats employed for grape pressing, from which the name “Tinera” derives. The original wine press is still preserved on the property.

The first floor was dedicated to silkworm breeding and still retains two large fireplaces used to maintain the warmth required during springtime. The second floor housed the sleeping quarters of the resident families.

The rustic annex also includes the ancient summer and winter stables, the hayloft above them, two carriage storage areas, and the historic woodshed, all elements that help preserve the authentic identity of the estate.

Today, Villa Adelaide Corti comprises ten residential units totaling approximately 1,228 square meters of cadastral area classified under category A/2. The interiors extend across the first and second floors and include thirteen bedrooms and twelve bathrooms, offering spacious and versatile living areas perfectly integrated into the historical character of the residence. Additional ancillary spaces used for storage are distributed between the basement and ground floors.
