Cassis occupies a singular position on the French Mediterranean coast, sitting between Marseille to the west and La Ciotat to the east, sheltered by the Cap Canaille cliffs, among the highest sea cliffs in France. The town is defined by its working fishing port, its limestone calanques, and a compact historic centre of pastel facades and narrow streets. It has long attracted a discerning residential population precisely because its geography limits development and preserves its scale.
Daily life centres on the port and the market on Place Baragnon, held Wednesday and Friday mornings. Restaurants including Nino and La Villa Madie, the latter holding two Michelin stars, serve the waterfront and surrounding hills. The calanques of Port-Miou, Port-Pin, and En-Vau are accessible on foot or by boat directly from town.
Marseille-Provence Airport is approximately 40 kilometres from Cassis, around 35 to 40 minutes by car. Cassis has its own SNCF train station, with direct services to Marseille Saint-Charles in under 25 minutes and connections to the TGV network. Marseille itself is 22 kilometres by road, roughly 30 minutes, giving access to high-speed rail links to Paris in approximately three hours.
