The Casoni hamlet is part of the municipality of Budrio. Its name comes from the ancient reed houses with straw and thatch roofs, typical of marshy areas, originally used as temporary dwellings for agricultural workers, later becoming permanent and improved with masonry walls and roofs.
Of very ancient origin, it was once a community of considerable importance, extending over a much larger area than today. Evidence of this past remains in the 16th-century palace of the Manzoli counts (now owned by Caliceti), already depicted in 1578 in the drawings of cartographer Ignazio Danti, near the embankment of the Idice River (diverted in 1816), along with the church of San Pancrazio (1565). The sacred building was destroyed by the flood of 1804 and immediately rebuilt a little farther away. Long since deconsecrated, it has now been converted by the current owner, Lidia Bagnoli, into a painting studio after a careful restoration that preserved the original spaces.
