One of the original Bernardsville Mountain Colony’s treasured properties is now available on eight point one acres, sited along a roadway that’s home to many prominent new estates. Built by George I. Seney in 1881 for his son, the accomplished architectural firm of Lamb and Rich designed this fine Shingle Style residence. The property was purchased in 1890 most notably by Charles Pfizer, owner and master of the Essex Fox Hounds and the chemical company that bears his name. He called it ’Yademos’, or ’Someday’ spelled backwards. Many original features have been preserved by subsequent owners including the exquisite wicker-work balustrade in the entry stair hall; the brilliantly tiled fireplace hearth in the grand ballroom; the broad balcony spanning the front of the home; an elegant dining room; and beguiling turret rooms for card games and office space. Six bedrooms are served by a two thousand twenty-five eight-bedroom septic, while the house is warmed by eight zones of gas or oil heat and cooled by central air. The kitchen designed by Canterbury opens to a fireside breakfast room filled with natural light. The versatile third floor contains a full apartment containing a kitchen, dining area, bedroom and office. A twenty-five feet by fifty feet heated pool and a handsome newer barn occupy land that was once part of Pfizer’s famous Japanese Garden uphill from the house. Featured in Volume One of Jack Turpin and W. Barry Thomson’s ’New Jersey Country Houses/The Somerset Hills’, this rare vintage treasure sits regally among other notable estates.

For fifty years, Turpin Real Estate has specialized in serving the real estate needs of the Somerset, Morris, and Hunterdon County areas of New Jersey. This is an extraordinary part of the state, rich in natural beauty and steeped in historical significance. Our five offices in Mendham, Far Hills, Bernardsville, Oldwick and Chatham are integral parts of the communities we serve. As a family owned business, it has always been important to us that we remain small enough to maintain our strong local identity. We live here and are eminently familiar with the communities we serve. As such, we are much more than a real estate brokerage. We are a source of local knowledge and advice. We have a profound understanding of the workings of our towns and villages, borne of years of involvement in community affairs.
