Avignon carries a cultural and historical weight that few cities in southern France can match. The medieval ramparts encircling the intra-muros quarter, the Palais des Papes rising above the Rhône, and the celebrated Pont Saint-Bénezet define a cityscape that has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995. Living within the walls means inhabiting a city that served as the seat of the papacy in the 14th century, with that history legible in every stone facade and cobbled lane.

Daily life within the walls centres on the Place de l’Horloge and the covered Les Halles market on Place Pie, open every morning. Avignon is exceptionally well connected for a city of its size. The Avignon TGV station places Paris Gare de Lyon at roughly 2 hours 40 minutes by high-speed rail, and Marseille is under 35 minutes. Marseille Provence Airport is approximately 80 kilometres away, around one hour by car, offering extensive European and international routes. Lyon Saint-Exupéry Airport is also reachable in under two hours.
