The machine clocked up a top speed of 200 km/h and ranked among the fastest series motorcycles in the world. This was also the first time that BMW Motorrad had commissioned a designer. Hans Muth styled the R 90 S with a profile setting it apart from other motorcycles in the marketplace and featuring the world’s first series cockpit fairing attached to the handlebars, a tank design penned with flowing contours, and the characteristic bench seat. BMW’s presentation of the BMW R90S in 1973 as the new flagship model of the revised /6 Series caused a sensation in the press. The machine clocked up a top speed of 200 km/h and ranked among the fastest series motorcycles in the world. This was also the first time that BMW Motorrad had commissioned a designer. Hans Muth styled the R90S with a profile that set it apart from other motorcycles in the marketplace and featuring the world’s first series cockpit fairing attached to the handlebars, a tank design penned with flowing contours, and the characteristic bench seat. The paintwork was developed especially for the flagship model in a lavish finish of Silver Smoke Metallic. This highlighted the elegant contour of the line and also ensured exclusivity. BMW was encouraged by the uniformly positive response from customers and the surprisingly good experience with the design involving complex and sophisticatedly intricate paintwork. BMW therefore also provided the motorcycle with a second livery in Daytona Orange in a model update carried out in 1975, which immediately conquered the hearts of fans and advanced to become an absolute favorite among BMW collectors to this day’.
