Vence is a medieval hilltop town in the Alpes-Maritimes, sitting at around 325 metres above sea level between the Var hinterland and the Côte d’Azur coast. Its old town, enclosed within Roman-era ramparts, has drawn artists and intellectuals for generations, most famously Henri Matisse, who designed the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the late 1940s. The surrounding landscape of terraced olive groves, limestone ridges, and fragrant garrigue gives Vence a distinctly different character from the coastal resorts below.

Daily life in Vence centres on the Place du Grand Jardin and the covered market, which runs several mornings a week. The old town holds a good range of independent restaurants and cafés along Rue du Marché and Place Clemenceau. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with its galleries and the Fondation Maeght, is a five-minute drive. Nice city centre is approximately 30 kilometres south.

Vence is served by regular bus connections to Nice, with the journey taking roughly one hour. The nearest train station is Cagnes-sur-Mer, approximately 12 kilometres south, with direct TGV services to Paris in around five and a half hours. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately 25 kilometres away, reachable in 30 to 40 minutes by car, and operates direct flights to most major European cities and intercontinental destinations.
