Vence is a medieval hilltop town in the Alpes-Maritimes, sitting at around 325 metres above sea level between the Var hinterland and the Côte d’Azur coast. Its old town, enclosed by Roman-era ramparts, has drawn artists and intellectuals for over a century, most famously Henri Matisse, who designed the Chapelle du Rosaire here in the late 1940s. The surrounding residential hills offer elevated positions with open views toward the Mediterranean, combining genuine Provençal character with proximity to the coast.

The old town centre offers a weekly market on Place du Grand Jardin, along with established restaurants including La Farigoulette and Auberge des Seigneurs. Saint-Paul-de-Vence, with its galleries and the Fondation Maeght, is five minutes by car. Cagnes-sur-Mer and the coast are reachable in under twenty minutes.

Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately 25 kilometres from Vence, typically a 20 to 25 minute drive via the A8 motorway, providing direct connections to most major European cities and intercontinental routes. The A8 also links to Monaco in around 40 minutes and to Cannes in 30 minutes. For rail travel, the nearest TGV station is Nice-Ville, connecting to Paris in around five and a half hours.
