History notes

Originally an Etruscan center, traditionally called BENACUM in Roman times, it became the capital of the Brescian Riviera of Lake Garda. It flourished between the 10th and 13th centuries, benefiting from privileges granted by Otto I, Frederick Barbarossa, and Robert of Anjou, King of Sicily. Thanks especially to Barbarossa, it gained partial autonomy. Under Venetian rule, it was part of the Quadra di Maderno territory.
