Pai - Fraction of Torri del Benaco
Another hamlet of Torri del Benaco is Pai, a small village mentioned since the beginning of the 10th century, located along the road that continues to Malcesine sul Garda.
The oldest nucleus is perched on the flank of Mount Baldo and still has the remains of ancient fortifications brought down by Barbarossa.

The ancient castle chapel, enlarged in the 17th century, became the present parish church dedicated to St. Mark, which preserves inside a wooden statue of the Madonna and Child (15th century), the baptistery from 1522, and frescoes from the 1300s-1500s.

The modern nucleus (Pai di sotto) is on the lakefront, near the 12th-century Romanesque church of St. Gregory, which was a parish church until the mid-1500s when the local ”countess,” so tradition has it, old and full of aches and pains, had the old castle chapel closest to her residence promoted to parish church status.

The ancient name of ”Palli,” which seems to derive from the pile dwellings found in the area, was later changed to the present one over time (”Pali sive Pai” says a document from 1372). Near Pai, the village of Crér deserves attention, famous for the leaches shaped by ancient glaciers that feature rock carvings.
