Saint-Rémy-de-Provence occupies a particular position in Provence: a small town of genuine cultural and historical weight, set at the northern foot of the Alpilles range. The old centre, contained within its ring of boulevards, is dense with 18th-century townhouses, plane-tree-lined squares, and the kind of market culture that has remained largely intact. The town is also the birthplace of Nostradamus and the site of the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum where Van Gogh painted during 1889 and 1890.

The Wednesday and Saturday markets on the Boulevard Mirabeau are among the best-stocked in the Bouches-du-Rhône. Restaurants including La Maison Jaune and Le Bistrot Découverte draw a serious dining crowd. The Alpilles natural regional park begins immediately south of town, with marked trails and cycling routes accessible on foot.

Marseille Provence Airport is roughly 80 kilometres southeast, with a drive of around one hour. Aix-en-Provence is 35 kilometres east by road. The A7 motorway is accessible via Cavaillon, approximately 15 kilometres northwest, providing direct links to Lyon and the broader French autoroute network.
