Plaza de la Merced is one of Málaga’s most recognizable public spaces, a broad, tree-lined square in the historic center that has served as a social and civic gathering point for centuries. The square is flanked by 19th-century residential buildings and anchored by the obelisk monument to General Torrijos. It is also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, whose family home on the square is now a museum. The surrounding streets connect directly to the cathedral quarter and the old Moorish medina.
Daily life here is genuinely walkable. The Picasso Museum is four minutes on foot, the Málaga Cathedral roughly eight. El Pimpi, one of the city’s most established restaurants, is a short walk along Calle Granada. The Mercado de Atarazanas, the main covered market, is within ten minutes. The beach at La Malagueta is reachable in around fifteen minutes on foot.
Málaga María Zambrano station, served by high-speed AVE rail, connects to Madrid in under two and a half hours and to Seville in approximately two hours. The station is around fifteen minutes from Plaza de la Merced by taxi or metro. Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport is roughly twelve kilometers from the city center, accessible in twenty minutes by taxi or via the C1 Cercanías train line from the city center.
