Sóller occupies a broad valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs along Mallorca’s northwest coast and holds UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural landscape. The town has a distinct character shaped by its relative isolation: until the early twentieth century, the only land route over the mountains was a mule track, which gave Sóller an unusually self-contained identity, strong trading ties with France, and an architectural legacy of Modernista buildings that set it apart from other Mallorcan towns.

The weekly market on Plaça de Constitució anchors local life. Restaurants such as Béns d’Avall, above Port de Sóller, hold serious culinary reputations. The port itself, two kilometres from the town centre, has a horseshoe bay with a promenade, beach, and a concentration of cafés and seafood restaurants. The historic tram connects the two.

The vintage tram runs between Sóller town and Port de Sóller in around fifteen minutes. The narrow-gauge Ferrocarril de Sóller railway connects the town to Palma in approximately one hour, passing through the mountains via a tunnel. Palma de Mallorca Airport is roughly 35 kilometres from Sóller, a drive of approximately 45 to 55 minutes depending on the route, with direct flights to most major European cities year-round.
