Sóller occupies a broad valley in the Serra de Tramuntana, the mountain range that runs along Mallorca’s northwest coast and carries UNESCO World Heritage status as a cultural landscape. The town has a distinct character shaped by its relative isolation: historically connected to the rest of the island by a single mountain road, it developed strong trading ties with France, and that mercantile history is visible in the modernista architecture around Plaça de Constitució. Port de Sóller, two kilometres away, is one of the few natural harbours on this coastline.

Daily life centres on Plaça de Constitució, where the market runs on Saturdays and Café Paris and Bar Turismo serve as reliable anchors. The port has a working waterfront with restaurants including Es Canyís and Lluna de Mar. The weekly tram connecting town to port runs regularly and is used by residents as much as visitors. Palma’s food and retail offer is roughly 30 minutes by road.

The Sóller Tunnel, opened in 1997, connects the valley to Palma via the Ma-11 in approximately 30 minutes by car. The historic rack-and-pinion train to Palma’s Plaça d’Espanya takes around one hour and runs several times daily. Palma de Mallorca Airport is roughly 45 minutes by car and operates year-round international routes to major European cities, with frequency increasing substantially from spring through autumn.
