The Engenho do Hinton was an extraordinary industrial achievement:
By the beginning of the 20th century, it employed over 230 workers.
In 1920, the factory reached peak production, processing 608 tons of sugar cane within a 24-hour period, making it one of the largest sugar cane processing facilities in Europe.
It became renowned for producing high-purity sugar cane juice, later fermented and distilled into Madeira Agricole Rum. Such was the importance of this industry that, during the first half of the 20th century, Madeira became known as ’the island of rum’.

Although the original Hinton factory no longer exists, having made way for the Santa Luzia Gardens, its legacy remains very much alive.
