Santanyí is a small historic town in the southeast of Mallorca, known for its well-preserved old quarter built almost entirely from the warm golden sandstone quarried locally, known as marès. The town has retained a distinctly Mallorcan character, attracting a discerning international community while avoiding the overdevelopment that has affected parts of the island’s coast. The central square, framed by the church of Sant Andreu and its detached bell tower, anchors a compact and walkable historic core.
The twice-weekly market on Plaça Major draws locals and residents from across the southeast. The town centre has a strong selection of independent restaurants, delicatessens, and galleries. The coves of Cala Figuera, Cala Santanyí, and Es Pontàs are within ten minutes by car.
Palma de Mallorca is approximately 60 kilometres to the northwest, reachable in around 50 minutes by car via the Ma-19. Palma Son Sant Joan International Airport is roughly 55 kilometres away, a journey of approximately 45 to 50 minutes by road. There is no direct rail connection to Santanyí, making a car essential for daily life. Regular bus services connect the town to Palma, though journey times are considerably longer.
