Sainte-Maxime occupies a privileged position on the Gulf of Saint-Tropez, directly across the water from Saint-Tropez itself. The town has long attracted a discerning international clientele who value its combination of genuine Provençal character and Côte d’Azur amenities, without the congestion that affects its more famous neighbour. The old port, the weekly market on Place Victor Hugo, and the pine-covered hills rising behind the town give Sainte-Maxime a coherent identity that has remained largely intact.
Daily life centres on the port area and the pedestrian streets of the old town, where the covered market operates year-round. Restaurants including La Maison Bleue and Le Dauphin line the waterfront. The Sainte-Maxime Golf Club, an 18-hole course set among umbrella pines, is one of the most established in the Var. Several sandy beaches are accessible directly from town.
Sainte-Maxime is served by the RD25 and RD559 coastal roads, with Saint-Tropez reachable by ferry in approximately 15 minutes or by road in around 30 minutes depending on season. Toulon-Hyères Airport is approximately 80 kilometres west, roughly one hour by car. Nice Côte d’Azur Airport, the primary international hub for the region with direct connections across Europe and beyond, is approximately 100 kilometres east, typically 75 to 90 minutes by car.
