Saint-Raphaël occupies a privileged position on the Esterel coast, where the deep-red porphyry cliffs of the Massif de l’Esterel meet the Mediterranean. The town has been a destination of consequence since the Belle Époque, when its mild winters and sheltered bay drew a European clientele that left behind a legacy of grand villas and a distinctive Moorish-Byzantine basilica. Today it retains the scale and character of a genuine Provençal town rather than a resort, with a working port, a covered market, and a resident population that sustains it year-round.
The covered market on Place Victor Hugo operates daily and anchors local life. The old port area offers restaurants including La Voile d’Or and Le Sirocco for seafood. The beaches of Boulouris and Agay are a short drive east. The town centre, with its shops and services, is walkable from most residential quartiers.
Saint-Raphaël has its own mainline railway station with direct TGV connections to Paris in approximately three hours and to Marseille in around one hour. Nice Côte d’Azur International Airport is approximately 65 kilometres west, reachable in under an hour by car outside peak summer traffic. The A8 motorway provides direct access to Cannes, Nice, and the Italian border to the east, and to Aix-en-Provence and beyond to the west.
