Ce dispositif permet à l’époque de surveiller le passage de la Côle sur près de 20 kilomètres. Au XVIIe siècle, le maître de forges veut rendre plus habitable sa demeure et lui adjoint une aile allongée, pourvue d’un toit à la Mansart. Au XVIIIe siècle, on poursuit les aménagements comme en témoigne la date de 1729 figurant au centre d’un porche donnant accès à une cave voûtée. La façade, orientée au sud, est bordée d’une terrasse dominant un étang. On y accède par un escalier à double volée.
