#Frenchman's Caye

After many years of private ownership, this island, Frenchman’s Caye is available and looking for its new owner. 
Frenchmans Caye is located off the coast of Punta Gorda, Belize; in the Southern part of Belize.
This 31 acre island features an abundance of trees, stunning white sandy beaches and is surrounded by coral beds and small reef systems.

WORLD CLASS FISHING, DIVING and SNORKELING

There is world class fishing at and near to Frenchman’s Caye.  With flats, reefs, lagoons, estuaries and five river mouths in close proximity, one can pursue permit, tarpon, snook, barracuda, and various snappers among other species.  With a bit of effort one can also go after Bluewater gamefish. In addition to snorkeling, diving and fishing, this is also a fine place to kayak and the views are amazing, especially of the coast of the mainland and the Seven Hills and other mountains which are visible in one of your photos.  This part of the Belize is absolutely gorgeous.

Frenchman’s Caye is one of several islands in this part of southern Belize which were used by the ancient Maya as part of their coastal trade route.  There are remains of Maya coral architecture hidden among the trees on this special place.

This island is part of the establishment of the marine Maya merchant dynasty. The historical account of Frenchmans Caye is that over a millennium ago, Maya merchants set up a dynasty from this location.

COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT PLAN

Frenchman’s Caye is mentioned in the Coastal Zone Management Plan as a site suited to low-scale ecological tourism or residential use.  The Caye’s proximity to Punta Gorda to the southwest provides peace and solitude while providing access to goods, services and transportation by air, land and sea.

The Caye is located in the Port Honduras Marine Reserve (PHMR) which is jointly managed by TIDE (a local NGO with funding from The Nature Conservancy and other international donors/agencies) and the Belize Fisheries Department in an effort to maintain a healthy, sustainable marine ecosystem.  PHMR is a critical foraging and calving site for the endangered West Indian manatee which are seen regularly in these waters.  There are also sea turtle nesting areas, particularly hawksbill turtles.  There are also plenty of birds in this area including a healthy population of magnificent Frigatebirds.

The views from the Caye are outstanding in all directions.  The natural beauty of the area is spectacular.  Within a short distance are a variety of ecotypes including stands of dwarf mangrove, gallery forests, rivers and lagoons as well as mangrove isles in abundance.  The Caye itself is a rare example of an island with highly diverse vegetation.
