Castello Maierhofen

Maierhofen Castle is an extraordinary, historically protected estate on the edge of the Altmühltal Nature Park. The historic castle, dating back to 1596, has undergone extensive renovation and today combines impressive castle architecture with a wide range of possible uses.

History
The history of Maierhofen dates back to the 12th century. The town was first mentioned in connection with the Prüfening Monastery as early as 1187. The Maierhofer family is documented in records dating back to the 13th century. A castle originally stood on the site of today’s estate.

Between 1596 and 1601, Maierhofen Castle was built in its current basic form. In the centuries that followed, the estate was closely tied to Bavarian history and changed hands several times. Elector Max II Emanuel had a particularly significant influence; he acquired the estate in 1691 and later gifted it to his chief court architect, Henrico Zuccalli.

After a tumultuous history—including the Thirty Years’ War and the Napoleonic Wars—the castle underwent extensive restoration beginning in 1981, saving it from decay. From 2003 to 2018, it housed a business school for small and medium-sized enterprises.

Today, Maierhofen Castle stands as a well-maintained historic estate with an impressive past and a promising future.
