La famiglia Visconti affidò la gestione della città a diverse famiglie nobili della zona, l’ultima delle quali mantenne il castello per oltre cinque secoli.
Tra il XVIII e il XIX secolo, i nuovi proprietari eseguirono una serie di lavori di restauro e consolidamento (principalmente sulle facciate est e sud), creando il cancello d’ingresso ancora esistente con la torre di guardia sovrastante.
La proprietà può anche fregiarsi del titolo di castello reale, poiché nel XIX secolo fu acquistata dalla regina Maria Cristina di Napoli e Sicilia, regina consorte di Sardegna come moglie del re Carlo Felice.
