Motril occupies a distinctive position on the Costa Tropical of Granada province, sitting at the foot of the Sierra Nevada where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. It is the largest city on the Granada coast and the commercial hub of the region, known for its subtropical microclimate that supports sugar cane and tropical fruit cultivation. The city carries a working, unhurried character that sets it apart from the more developed resort towns further east along the Andalusian coast.

Daily life centres on the Mercado Municipal de Abastos for fresh produce, and the seafront district of Playa de Poniente offers straightforward fish restaurants along the paseo. The historic centre around Plaza de España and the Iglesia de la Encarnación provides the main civic and commercial core. The beaches of Playa Granada and Calahonda are within a short drive.

Motril sits approximately 70 kilometres south of Granada city, roughly an hour by road via the A-44 motorway, which also connects to the A-7 coastal highway running east toward Almería and west toward Málaga. Granada Airport is around 65 kilometres away, offering domestic routes and some European connections. Málaga Airport, the principal international hub for the region, is approximately 100 kilometres west, reachable in around 90 minutes by car.
