In 1837 (a year before her coronation) one of those weary travellers was a young Princess Victoria. Without hesitation the Landlord James Turner jumped on his horse and galloped down the hill after the carriage and managed to bring it to a halt saving Queen Victorias life. The Old Fox & Crown and its landlord were presented with a royal warrant for his bravery. The original warrant was donated to the Highgate Literary & Scientific Institution where it can be seen today.
