* Original house built around 1846 Thomas Revington leased it to Edward Cruise of Cruise’s Hotel now Cruises Street. Cruise was a personal friend of Daniel O’Connell. A beautiful painting of Sunville House in 1859 by John E Bosanquet can be found in the Limerick museum and a copy described as a prosperous merchants villa is in the book The Watercolours of Ireland by Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin.
Following the death of Edward Cruise the Cleeves family of industrialists lived in the house for several generations. Their products evolved from yarns and materials to milk and confectionary products. Cleeves sweets and toffees still bear their name today. The later Victorian additions to the house around 1890s were the bachelor’s quarters to the rear where the apartments are situated, a two storey pentagonal bay window, a two storey extension to the side of the house where there was a conservatory and extensive ornate plasterwork and decorative ceilings.

In 1959 Donogh O’Malley the minister for education who brought in free education and his wife Hilda, the woman who inspired poet Patrick Kavanagh to write the haunting song On Raglan Road acquired the house. Donogh used the house for entertaining visitors from Dublin and even kept a room exclusively locked up for Eamonn de Valera and his wife Sinead who stayed with the family each year after Easter. Other notable visitors at the time were Sean Lemass, Kate O’Brien, Edna O’Brien, Sean Mcentee and his wife Margaret and also Richard Harris. Sunville House was the base of operations at the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in UK in 1967 with Neil Blaney, Charles Haughey, Paudge Brennan and Brian Lenihan all getting together.
Donogh developed the surrounding land around the house and the and since then the house has been through several owners and even a microfiche business until the current owners bought it nearly 30 years ago. It has been lovingly restored encompassing contemporary luxury with the beautiful original features and structure.
